Creative Session

Decolonising the Guitar with Ray Aggs

In this workshop Ray Aggs will read from their zine ‘DIY GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS’ and talk about the roots of the guitar from a black feminist perspective. They aim at demystifying the instrument by deconstructing the white male rock’n roll cannon and exposing the whitewashing of punk, folk and rock history. We will talk traditional and experimental guitar techniques and learn a simple song together.

No previous knowledge of the guitar is necessary – non musicians and beginners are all welcome!

Ray Aggs is a Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Best known for their distinctive guitar work influenced by West African highlife and post-punk, they also sing and play violin.

Aggs, a specialist in euphoric post-punk, has gained international recognition with collaborative touring projects Trash Kit, Shopping and Sacred Paws. Creating zines and coordinating workshops encouraging women, non-binary people and people of colour to form bands, Aggs has invigorated the DIY scene in the UK. Aggs released a solo album on Lost Map Records as part of the Visitations residency in 2019 and self-released //Tape 1// in 2020. Both releases feature their signature hybrid post-punk/highlife inspirations stripped down to new minimal extremes. Pulsating electronic beats, cool recited lyrical mantras and spindly guitar lines abound in this life-affirming music that speaks directly to your heart.
