Creative Sessions 2023-24 round up

As part of the annual Music Space programme we delivered a series of six practice-based creative sessions from January to April 2024. The sessions were for young people who are based in Glasgow, and who are interested in exploring sound, music and creativity. Specifically the sessions were also for those who face barriers to creative opportunities.

The sessions included:

Love is Serving the Ears Now, with Riah from Listen Gallery > centred listening and sound as an artistic practice.

DJing for Beginners with FEENA from Miss World > covered some of the basics of DJing like track selection, beat matching and EQs, as well as beginning to find your sound.

Approaches to Recording with Murray Collier > explored different approaches to recording sounds, and experimenting with production using both analogue and digital processes in the studio.

Funding Advice with the Counterflows Team > discussed different funding opportunities for musicians who are interested in performance, recording and community projects. The session also covered what to ask for, how to write a good proposal and how to put together a budget.

Decolonising the Guitar with Ray Aggs > explored the roots of the guitar from a black feminist perspective. The session also considered traditional and experimental guitar techniques and the group learnt a simple song together.

Field Recording with Inge Thomson > explored approaches to field recording and editing.

See here for further info on the programme.

Huge thanks to the facilitators, all those who took part and Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI) who funded the programme.
